Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an evolving global health concern. This page will be updated with the latest information as it becomes available.

For information on COVID-19 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, visit the Australian Federal Government Department of Health website and  information about COVID-19 vaccines can be accessed here.

Use the Eligibility Checker to find out when you can receive a vaccine. If you are eligible, you will be able to view vaccination locations and book an appointment on the Australian Government Department of Health website.


**If you are sick and think you have symptoms of COVID-19, seek medical advice. Call the National Coronavirus Helpline 1800 020 080 for advice and to discuss symptoms. The line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Summary of Fact-based COVID-19 Communication Resources

The Australian Government Department of Health have prepared a suite of communication resources containing fact-based content about COVID-19 vaccines, including ones developed specifically for vaccine providers that work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

The resources are referred to as myth busters because they have been developed to dispel some most common misinformation.

In the suite you will find social media content including images and suggested text, and a fact sheet that could be turned into separate posters/flyers as needed:

COVID-19 Important Information

In this pack, you’ll find suggested social tiles and captions, two posters and a community announcement radio script, reminding everyone on the importance of keeping two big steps away from others, washing hands regularly, getting tested if you’re unwell, and following state and territory guidelines and restrictions.

Please use these assets as you see fit and adapt to your local requirements.

Following announcement regarding ATAGI’s revised recommendations on the use of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca, the Department of Health have developed a number of resources which are available for download.

Official statements

COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibilty Changes

From 8 June 2021, the following people will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine:

  • All adults aged 40-49
  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 to 49
  • NDIS participants aged years 16 and over, and carers of NDIS participants of any age
  • Temporary visa holders aged under 50 years who are currently in Australia and have been approved for return travel to Australia through the travel exemption process.
This is in addition to those who were already eligible:
 
  • All adults aged 50 and over
  • Quarantine and border workers
  • Health care workers
  • Aged care and disability care residents and staff
  • People aged 16 and over with an underlying medical condition or significant disability
  • Critical and high risk workers aged 16 and over including defence, police, fire, emergency services and meat processing
  • Individuals with an Australian Border Force outwards travel exemption in an eligible category

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group on COVID-19 Communiques

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group on COVID-19 (the Taskforce) was convened in March 2020 to develop and deliver a National Management Plan to protect communities. The Taskforce also advises on health issues related to COVID-19 and is co-chaired by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), and the Australian Government Department of Health. It continues to meet weekly and receives regular updates about the COVID-19 vaccines.
