Quality Use of Medicines Maximised for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People (QUMAX)
The QUMAX Program aims to improve quality use of medicines and contribute to positive health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, of any age, who present at participating Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHOs).
QUMAX was established as a collaboration between the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia. QUMAX is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health under the Sixth Community Pharmacy Agreement (CPA).
To achieve the aim of the QUMAX Program, funding is allocated among eligible ACCHOs on an annual basis through a registration process. Once funding is allocated each ACCHO is required to complete a Work Plan specific to the needs of their community.
The QUMAX Work Plan includes seven approved support areas. The ACCHO can choose to allocate funds against one or all areas.
QUMAX Seven Support Areas
1. Dose Administration Aid (DAA) arrangements -aims to reduce the financial barriers to accessing comprehensive DAA services provided by community pharmacies to improve medication adherence and management for ACCHO clients.
2. QUM Pharmacy Support– aims to provide additional capacity for community pharmacy involvement and support in areas including Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) planning, policy and protocol development and QUMAX Work Plan development.
3. Home Medicine Review (HMR) Models of Support– Aims to reduce the cultural and logistical barriers and access to HMR services by ACCHO clients.
4. QUM Devices-aims to reduce the financial barriers to access to QUM devices to improve overall delivery of medicines and management of chronic disease by ACCHO clients.
5. QUM Education– aims to reduce financial barriers associated with access to QUM educations and health promotion for ACCHO employees and their clients. This category may also help ACCHOs access current medicine resources, promoting suitable, safe and effective medication management for ACCHO clients.
6. Cultural Awareness– aims to improve access and delivery of Cultural Awareness resources and training for Community Pharmacy to promoting a culturally aware and safe pharmacy environment.
7. Transport– aims to reduce barriers of access to medicines and community pharmacy services by providing transport support.
The seven work plan categories enable ACCHOs to develop local QUM objectives and negotiate with preferred Community Pharmacies to establish bulk local QUMAX DAA Agreements and other support as requested.

QUMAX Program – 2016 Report Back to Members
