Today, on National Sorry Day, we honour Stolen Generations survivors, their descendants, families and communities. We remember the children taken from their families, Country, culture, and kin. We acknowledge the truth our communities have carried for generations, and the strength of those who survived policies designed to break the connection. But remembrance alone is not enough.
The Bringing Them Home report told the truth. Survivors have told the truth. Communities have carried the truth.
Now, governments must carry the responsibility. This year’s theme, From Sorry to Action, is a call to move beyond words. It calls for healing, justice, truth-telling and action in survivors’ lifetimes.
For NACCHO, that means backing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled solutions. It means listening to survivors. It means investing in healing led by communities, not systems speaking over them.
Because a nation does not heal by looking away.
– It heals by telling the truth.
– It heals by keeping its promises.
– It heals by acting.
