Elder Care Support Program

 

Program Aims

The program aims to:

  • Support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to understand and engage with the aged care system, to receive greater local support.
  • Reduce barriers across the aged care journey to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing aged care services, achieving or exceeding parity with non-Indigenous people at a whole of system and program level.
  • Increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receiving care on Country.
  • Increase clinical and non-clinical employment and career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in aged care.
  • Increase real time intelligence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s needs and experience in aged care.

Program support

The Elder Care Support workforce will be supported with extensive face-to-face and online training and ongoing support, to ensure they are well prepared to succeed in their role.

  • Onboarding resource toolkit
  • Polo shirt
  • Online community of practice sessions
  • Face-to-face Yarning Circles
  • Continuous online training

Elder Care Support Program Distribution by State/Territory

Dedicated program support staff based in NACCHO Affiliates and regional partners will deliver training and extensive support to the local workforce. These program positions are:

  • Workforce and Training Coordinator
  • Project Officer

Local staff based within ACCHOs will engage directly with community members and local service providers to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to understand, coordinate and access aged care services. These key positions are:

  • Aged Care Support Coordinator
  • Aged Care Support Connector
