Mamu Health Service Limited is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation owned and managed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide culturally appropriate and comprehensive primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities of Innisfail, Tully, Ravenshoe, Mt Garnet and Babinda. 

Our service provides a multi-disciplinary approach with linkages to specialists and allied health providers to deliver preventative and ongoing holistic health care, health promotion and education, safety and wellbeing support to communities within our service region.

Purpose of the Role

The purpose of the Sport and Recreation Officer is to develop, coordinate and deliver sport and recreational programs and activities to members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community within MHSL Geographic area to increase active participation and improve health and wellbeing.

This Position aims to increase the physical activity levels of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the community. Physical inactivity has been identified as a contributing factor to the gap in health and life expectancy.

Travelling throughout the geographic service area of Mamu Health Service Limited (MHSL) is a requirement of this position.

Specific Duties

  • Coordinate and deliver programs and services to promote physical activity
  • Identify, evaluate and implement sport, recreation and leisure activity programs that encourage clients to participate in physical activity opportunities
  • Educate clients on the health benefits of physical activity 
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of services, activities and culturally appropriate resources offered by MHSL that can be used to supplement Sport and Recreation Programs 

Conditions of Employment

  • It is a condition of employment for the employee in this role to be, and remain vaccinated against or show immunity to all Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs), or as directed by State Law or Federal Law, during their employment. VPDs include Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella (chicken pox) and Pertussis (whooping cough), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Covid-19.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to, and work at all Mamu Health Service Limited’s work location and service area when required.
  • Current QLD drivers licence is required.
  • Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one.
  • Current Working With Children “Blue Card” prior to the employment with Mamu Health Service Limited (MHSL).
  • A Criminal History Check (AFP) will be conducted upon commencement of employment.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Qualification and/or Certificate in Fitness or related field desirable or ability to obtain.
  • High level skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising own work to achieve specific tasks and set objectives efficiently and effectively within set timeframe 
  • Good computer skills including proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Demonstrated understanding of data collection and reporting. 
  • Ability to build relationships and to work strategically with a diverse range of individuals and organisations to develop partnerships to address the needs of the target group.
  • Ability to provide holistic support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families with an emphasis on physical activity
  • Ability to conduct events, activities etc for targeted and plan population groups across the community 
  • Ability to work in any location within Mamu Health Service’s service area when required
  • Ability to comprehensively understand and abide by Mamu Health Service’s policies and procedures 
  • Ability to achieve and adhere to deadlines
  • Well presented, enthusiastic, positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality and tact when dealing with sensitive issues 
  • A flexible approach to work with willingness and ability to demonstrate initiative and accept responsibility
  • Exceptional teamwork skills and ability to work with minimal/no supervision 
  • Ability to follow directions
