Liver Cancer Awareness Month: Supporting Prevention and Early Detection Through Primary Care

Liver Cancer Awareness Month: Supporting Prevention and Early Detection Through Primary Care

Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. ACCHOs and primary care teams play an important role in supporting culturally safe prevention, risk assessment and ongoing care.

This October, we encourage health teams to:
· Raise awareness of liver cancer risk, particularly among people living with hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease or cirrhosis.
· Support appropriate hepatitis testing, treatment and follow-up.
· Assess who needs liver cancer surveillance and help eligible patients access regular monitoring.

The NACCHO–RACGP National guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people provides guidance to support preventive care

In addition, Liver Foundation has provided a number of resources to help guide conversations with community.

Use this month to start conversations and strengthen pathways to liver health care.
