Period Products Program
The Period Products Program aims to reduce period barriers through increased access to period products, education initiatives and support so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, girls and gender diverse people can thrive in school, work, leisure and community.
What we do
In June 2024, the (then) Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Ged Kearney announced $12.5 million over 4 years to supply period products to remote and rural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, girls and those who menstruate.
Awarded to NACCHO, the Period Product Program (PPP) aims to provide improved access to safe and suitable menstrual products and support capacity building and education initiatives in rural and remote Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs).
Eligibility
The program is being rolled out in phases. At present, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) located in Modified Monash Model (MMM) Category 4, 5, 6, or 7 locations are eligible to participate.
Our approach
Our approach focusses on improving period equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isalnder Communities through culturally safe and community-led distribution and education activities.
By partnering with local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and government initiatives, this strategy integrates period health into the broader goal of closing the health gap by reducing period poverty to ensure that menstruation doesn’t serve as a barrier to school, work and daily community participation.
Our Impact
Having consistent and culturally appropriate access to period products in rural, remote and very remote Aboriginal communities supports health, dignity, and ability to fully take part in everyday life.
When people can manage their periods safely and with confidence, they are better able to attend school, go to work, and take part in cultural and community activities without disruption or embarrassment.
Access to period products also strengthens wellbeing, independence, and confidence, while helping to create a more open and supportive environment for conversations about menstrual health.
