What We Do

The Cancer Team at NACCHO works with members to reduce the cancer burden and improve cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. To achieve this, we provide support to initiatives, partnerships and programs across a wide range of stakeholders that will benefit the community-controlled sector.

Our Work

A dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan is needed to improve cancer outcomes for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing to coordinate the co-design of the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan. This will be separate to the Australian Cancer Plan, which is currently under development by Cancer Australia. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan will apply the best available evidence and reflect the ethos of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. It will highlight culturally safe approaches to improve cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, across all points of the cancer journey. The Cancer Plan will showcase the role the community-controlled sector must play in leading improved cancer outcomes. It will privilege the voices and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to ensure community ownership, while engaging with a wide range of organisations and experts. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan is expected to be completed in 2023.

What We Do

Improving cancer outcomes directly aligns to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and the four Priority Reforms that seek to overcome the inequity experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and achieve life outcomes equal to all Australians.

Promotion and Advocacy

The Cancer team gathers evidence to demonstrate the needs of the community-controlled sector and the communities they service. This evidence is presented to the Government and key stakeholders, along with proposed actions, as part of NACCHO’s ongoing advocacy for the sector.

Capacity Building

NACCHO works with members around Australia to enhance the capacity of the sector to support community members and their families affected by cancer.

Program Delivery

The Cancer team works in partnership with ACCHOs to deliver cancer programs across prevention, screening, early diagnosis, treatment and wrap around support for community members.
